New PBS doc names San Diego as America's 'wildest city'

• That means the 3.3 million people who live here are surrounded by more plants, animals, and microorganisms than anyone else in the country.

What we learned: There's beauty, violence and humor sprinkled into the film that follows orcas hunting dolphins off the coast of La Jolla, where seals have found safe harbor to give birth.

• The squirrel population is thriving in city parks with crows and our dogs as their biggest predators.
• The crow population has exploded since the swarming birds first descended on San Diego in the 1980s.
• The vibrant desert super blooms are visible from space.
• Bobcats rely on June gloom for water in the hills.
• San Diego banned spring beach cleanups below the high tide mark to protect the hoards of grunion that flop out of the ocean and across the sand to lay eggs. The fish also form eyes and a beating heart while they're still in the sand.

Driving the news: The documentary premiered earlier in November and it's showing on the big screen at the San Diego Natural History Museum starting Friday.
