California hasn't gone red in more than 30 years

The last time a Republican presidential candidate won California was in 1988, when Vice President George H.W. Bush was elected.
Why it matters: The state has been a Democratic stronghold for nearly four decades, and that's likely to remain the case in this election with Vice President Kamala Harris, who came up in California politics.
Zoom in: San Diego County last voted for the Republican ticket in 2004, when George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were re-elected.
State of play: The Harris campaign leads former President Trump 60% to 29%, according to a September survey of likely voters by the Public Policy Institute of California.
- It was conducted before the Sept. 10 presidential debate.
The intrigue: The survey found 56% of likely voters say they are satisfied with the choice of candidates.
- When the question was asked in April with President Biden and Trump, 36% said they were satisfied.
What we're watching: All eyes this year are on swing state with the lightest shades of red and blue.
