Every community in Southwest Pennsylvania seemingly has a pizza place, if not multiple, but which one is the best?
Why it matters: Pizza beefs are legendary in Pittsburgh, and it's time to help squash — or perpetuate — them with a public vote.
The big picture: Axios assembled a bracket of the top 16 pizza joints, factoring in reader input, general popularity and deliciousness.
- We also avoided pies that were better known for specialty toppings, and instead picked places that serve the typical pizza ingredients to get a better face-to-face comparison.
How it works: Vote below in our tournament-style bracket each day this week to crown the best pizza.
- Voting ends at 2pm each day, and winners will move to the next round until the champ is chosen on Friday.
Zoom in: The candidates are grouped into four styles.
- Pittsburgh classics: Benny Fierro's in South Side vs. Fiori's in Brookline, and the Squirrel Hill matchup of Aiello's vs. Mineo's.
- Ohio Valley style: Della Sala's in Penn Hills vs. DiSalla's in Munhall, and Beto's in Banksville vs. Police Station Pizza in Ambridge.
- Price point: Low for Shelly Pie Pizza in Turtle Creek vs. Vincent's Pizza Park (aka Vinnie Pie) in North Braddock, and high for Pizzeria Davide in the Strip and Mercurio's in Shadyside.
- New York style: Badamo's vs. Rockaway, and the Lawrenceville fight between Driftwood Oven and Pizza Lupo.
The bottom line: We definitely missed some great pizza places, and also some weird ones, but we had to draw the line somewhere.
