Context: It's not the biggest or most historic, but Pittsburgh built the nation with its steel industry, has the best Fourth of July celebration, is the ketchup capital of the world, and loves football like no other region.
What they're saying: Bill Flanagan, host of "Our Region's Business," agreed we had serious American bona fides and reminded us that historian David McCullough described Pittsburgh as "the indispensable American City" at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center's dedication ceremony.
Jed Lyons praised Pittsburgh's Scots-Irish settlers, who "were rugged, tough and determined to not just trade goods, but to settle and farm on the frontier. Their grit and perseverance was rewarded in Pittsburgh where they built our early iron, glass and other industries that made the city great."
Don Koenig wrote on X that "Pittsburgh is where oil exploration started (Titusville), broadcast media was born (KDKA) and anti-tax rebellion (Whiskey Rebellion) all started."
The other side: Antonio Pelullo, a host and reporter at Butler Radio, said on X that Pittsburgh "is not even the most American city in Pennsylvania," noting that Philadelphia deserves that nod.
