Redbuds return to Pittsburgh

Our native redbud blooms are out in full force.
The intrigue: Eastern redbuds are native to Pittsburgh, Southern Appalachia and much of the Ohio River basin.
- They are among the first trees to bloom in April, and advocates at Project Redbud want Pittsburghers to think of them as our version of Washington, D.C.'s cherry blossoms.
Fun fact: George Washington had some rough goes in Western Pennsylvania, but he adored redbuds and transplanted trees to Mt. Vernon, per Visit Pittsburgh.
The bottom line: Redbuds are also a great ingredient in several springtime recipes.
