DNC chair says abortion access is at risk in Pa. court races

What they're saying: Martin warned if the three Supreme Court justices that were elected as Democrats are not retained, it would provide an opening for Republicans to flip the power balance on court and threaten Pennsylvania's abortion rights and anti-gerrymandering rulings, as conservatives have in other states.

• "It is critical that Pennsylvanians know what is at stake," said Martin, who is phone banking with volunteers in Pittsburgh on Wednesday and rallying in Philadelphia on Thursday.

Context: Judges elected as Democrats currently hold a 5-2 majority on the state Supreme Court.

• Three Democratic judges are up for retention, and if they were not retained, the court would be split evenly, giving Republicans a chance to flip the court in 2027.

The other side: Ads from conservative group Commonwealth Partners have said the Supreme Court's 2018 partisan gerrymander decision "rigged the system for the radical left" and are encouraging people to vote against retention.

What to watch for: In 45 elections throughout the country since President Trump won in November, Democrats have overperformed his margin of victory by an average of 16 percentage points, said Martin.

• He said next week's races could be a sign of Democratic momentum going into next year's midterms.
