5 must-try Pittsburgh spots for National Pierogi Day

This Wednesday is pierogies' special day: National Pierogi Day.

Why it matters: No city in America loves pierogies more than Pittsburgh. We love to eat them, play games with them, and even watch them race.

Here are some potato dumplings worth seeking out:

Pierogies Plus

Supplies pierogies for many restaurants across the 'Burgh, this staple in McKees Rocks is housed in a no-frills former gas station with outdoor tables under an overhang to enjoy a quick lunch.

Why we love it: This is what pierogies should taste like. Prices are extremely reasonable, too.

Apteka

This Bloomfield vegan restaurant is one of the city's best, and it also has some of the fanciest and most delectable pierogies.

Why we love it: Inventive fillings like smoked celeriac and mushrooms offer a unique dumpling experience. They make pierogi presentations an art form.

Polska Laska

A lunchtime restaurant in Sharpsburg is new on the dumpling scene and is quickly becoming a fan favorite.

Why we love it: It has an intense dedication to traditional, Eastern European flavors.

Gooski's

This Polish Hill dive bar known for smoky punk rock shows also slings out potato and cheese, sauerkraut, and cottage cheese pierogies.

Why we love it: Secondhand smoke, a bottle of Iron City and a plate of pierogies is about as Pittsburgh as you can get.

Church Brew Works

Craft beer and a fun menu make this Lawrenceville restaurant housed in a former church a constant draw.

Why we love it: One of the best places to take tourists for pierogies. You can order traditional potato and cheese with buttered onions, or a cheffy offering like pierogies tossed in Buffalo chicken sauce.
