The Steel City is a shot-and-beer town, but increasingly those beverages are leaving out the alcohol.
The intrigue: It's Non-Alcholic Cocktail Week in Pittsburgh, and there are scores of options to imbibe delicious drinks, beers and wines without getting tipsy.
- Open Road is hosting the booze-free events this week across the region, which include a faux-spiked slushie mixer, a non-boozy brunch, and a barbecue with spirit-free drinks.
State of play: As alcohol consumption declines, nonalcoholic drinks are rising in popularity, driven by Gen Z and millennials' desire to cut back on drinking.
Bottoms up: Most bars in the region offer at least one or two nonalcoholic options, and several establishments stand out for variety, quality and creativity.
- Here is a list of our favorites.
Open Road, Garfield
This bottle shop offers the biggest variety of nonalcoholic products in the region, with staff that provide expert recommendations. The shop plans a nonalcoholic bar later this year.
Bar Botanico, Lawrenceville
A sleek cocktail bar that draws crowds. Mocktail options are extensive and made from NA spirits so they pack a strong flavor, without the booze. Try the Seedlip espresso martini.
Goodlander Cocktail Brewery, Larimer
This cocktail creator offers a casual bar space that's perfect for trying unique mocktails. Sip one and then purchase a growler to take home.
Con Alma, Downtown
Come for a nonalcoholic sparkling riesling or amaro while taking in some of the city's best live jazz. Keep it classy with a booze-free bourbon.
Tina's, Bloomfield
Craft mocktails that emulate this bar's hip cocktail selection. Tina's also offers several low-ABV cocktails if you are OK with a little booze.
- Ask for a Little Italy cocktail. It's low-ABV and off the menu, but bartenders usually know it. A perfect introduction to Cynar amaro.
Two Frays, Garfield
A brewery that has embraced NA beers. Usually has multiple nonalcoholic beers on tap and becomes purely NA on Mondays. Try the Finicky Beast if you enjoy West Coast IPAs like me.
Mixtape, Garfield
Bring your party atmosphere to this bar that regularly changes themes with colorful and intricate decorations. Try a nonalcoholic michelada called Bruised Knuckles or a spritz.
- Located on Penn Avenue, this could be just one stop on a nonalcoholic bar crawl with Two Frays and Open Road in this same corridor.
