Shapiro blasts GOP's "big, beautiful bill"

By the numbers: 11.8 million people — including 500,000 Pennsylvanians — will lose health care if the bill passes, Shapiro said in a statement.

• 7 million people — including 140,000 Pennsylvanians — would lose food assistance with SNAP cuts.
• Shapiro said 26,000 jobs in building trades will be threatened and $3 billion in investment could be lost in Pennsylvania due to energy sector-related cuts.
• He said the bill would add $3.3 trillion to the national deficit.

What they're saying: Shapiro said President Trump and Republicans campaigned on reducing the deficit, vowed not to cut Medicaid and pledged to protect trade union jobs, but this bill betrays those promises.

• "They lied to win the election in the short term and the damage this will do here in Pennsylvania and across America is staggering and will be felt for years to come," Shapiro said.

The other side: Republican Sen. Dave McCormick defended the legislation last week on Fox News Radio. He said it was needed to hold off coming tax increases due to expiring tax rules, fund defense and border walls and make changes to eliminate alleged waste and fraud in Medicaid.

• "It must get done. We have been charged by the American people to bring about change, and this big, beautiful bill is going to bring out profound and fundamental change," he said.
