What to know about Saturday's 50501 protests

Pittsburgh will join another nationwide grassroots protest against the Trump administration this Saturday.

Why it matters: The 50501 Movement — short for 50 protests, 50 states, 1 movement — emerged as a call for Americans to support one another and build a "social support web," as federal policies target marginalized communities, Axios' April Rubin reports.

The movement began organizing on Reddit and is focused on pushing back against what it describes as executive overreach by the Trump administration.

Zoom in: 50501 Pittsburgh and Stand Up for Science will host an Earth Day rally this Saturday from 1pm–3pm at Schenley Plaza in Oakland.

Similar past events have brought together local researchers, doctors and community members to protest proposed federal funding cuts to scientific agencies like the NIH, FDA and CDC.
A separate rally is planned in Greensburg.

The big picture: Hundreds of events are scheduled nationwide for Saturday, including rallies, protests, nature cleanups and more.

Zoom out: Earlier this month, thousands in Pittsburgh joined the nationwide "Hands Off!" movement — the largest single-day protest against President Trump since he took office.

Protesters spoke out against federal layoffs, cuts to research funding, anti-immigration policies, attacks on transgender rights and Elon Musk's growing government influence through DOGE.
Millions of people across the country protested during the "Hands Off!"
movement. They took to streets, state capitals, federal buildings, congressional offices and city centers.
