Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office spends $132,500 on cowboy hats

Why it matters: The $132,500 expense comes amid a high-profile budget fight with Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

Driving the news: MDSO purchased about 1,000 cowboy hats priced at $132.50 each, as first reported by Local 10 and confirmed to Axios by the sheriff's office.

• The department announced the hats Sunday in an Instagram video, saying it was "bringing a little Western flair" to the police beat.

• "We've always worn the badge, now we're adding a little sheriff style to it," Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz says in the video.
• The hats are optional, Local 10 says.

Friction point: Cordero-Stutz has said she will appeal the $1.2 billion budget Levine Cava gave the sheriff's office, and she will ask the state to force the county to spend $42 million more, the Miami Herald reported.

• Levine Cava said the law enforcement budget was the largest ever in Miami-Dade history and exceeded the sheriff's $1 billion budget request, according to Local 10.
