Miami among cities tapped for national housing initiative

• A 2024 report from Miami Homes for All found Miami-Dade was short more than 90,100 affordable units for renter households earning below 80% of the Area Median Income, or about $75,000.

Driving the news: Bloomberg Philanthropies on Thursday announced it will fund efforts to streamline local housing construction, including digitizing application reviews and permitting processes, per a news release.

What they're saying: "We expect fast results, measured in more homes cleared for construction," City of Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins said in the release.

Zoom in: Municipalities will receive $450,000 to $750,000 in funding for piloting technology, working with architects to draft permit-ready plans and hiring more staff, per the release.

• It's unclear how much funding Miami will get.

Between the lines: The new initiative is the latest expansion of a prior housing program the organization piloted in Atlanta, Austin, Texas, and San Diego.
