Phở Nam may be Miami's best new restaurant.
- A bold statement, I know. I'm prepared to back it up.
Why it matters: Miami's pho options are notoriously limited. Phở Nam fills that gap.
- Plus, it's from the folks behind downtown favorite Tâm Tâm, so you know it'll be good.
The vibe: Modeled after a traditional Saigon pho shop, the environment is casual and laid-back. Plastic stools are outside for waiting or dining at the limited tables. A few bar stools allow for individual counter service.
- Pay attention to the music. The playlist is excellent.
Pro tip: Get there early. We made a reservation (three weeks prior!) for 5pm (ideal), and a line of folks were already waiting to add their name.
- If there's a wait, head to Over Under or Lost Boy Dry Goods for a drink.
What we ordered: Everything (almost), and you should too. We also got a few Vietnamese beers and teas to try. All were excellent.
- Spring rolls (vegan option): Light and fresh with the best peanut dipping sauce we've had.
- Imperial rolls: Incredibly flavorful. The rice paper wrap was perfectly thin and crispy.
- Cabbage chicken salad (vegan): Gingery. Fresh. Wonderful texture.
- Vietnamese pizza (vegan): The grilled rice paper is thin and crispy yet somehow firm enough to hold the toppings. Nice kick.
- Sizzling pancakes (vegan): This crepe-like dish is filled with fresh ingredients like mushrooms, shrimp and pork. Served with lettuce and pickled veggies to make a texture- and flavor-packed wrap.
- Fried whole fish: Yes, it's big. Yes, it's worth it. The skin is crunchy; the meat is incredibly flaky and tender. Comes with lettuce wrap essentials.
- Beef pho: The broth (slightly spicy, perfectly seasoned) is excellent on its own. Add the tender beef and fresh noodles and it's the most comforting dish you'll eat all week.
The bottom line: Every dish is packed with fresh flavors, lots of herbs and different textures to make each bite exciting.
