"Souls To The Voter Rolls": Local orgs host registration event

• Black churches have for years mobilized their members to the polls; local organizations like PACT and Engage Miami said this weekend's events are a way to honor the tradition and "ensure as many people as possible are able and ready to vote" come November, per a news release.

State of play: Beginning tomorrow through Sunday, 15 congregations across the county will open to check voters' registration status, help make registration updates and explain acceptable forms of identification.

• Barry University, Coral Gables Congregational UCC and St. Thomas the Episcopal are among the participating locations. (Full list here.)

The big picture: Florida's election laws are also changing: Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier this year signed into law the SAVES ACT, which will go into effect next year.

• The law adds new restrictions for voter registration and voting — a move voting rights advocates say will disenfranchise eligible voters.
• The law is being challenged.
