Big real estate firms and developers fund Vicki Lopez's campaign

More than 70% of Miami-Dade Commissioner Vicki Lopez's District 5 reelection campaign was funded by executives and companies in real estate-related industries, the Real Deal reported.

Why it matters: Lopez, who was appointed to succeed now-Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins, spearheaded the Live Local Act, which preempts local zoning for affordable housing, while serving in the state House of Representatives.

As a Miami-Dade commissioner, she's advocated for more housing options and addressing affordability.

By the numbers: Her political action committee Common Sense Government raised $964,736 this year, the outlet reported.

The largest donor was Michael D. Wohl of Coral Rock Development, a top real estate investment firm in the area, with a combined $50,000.
Companies affiliated with Michael Swerdlow, a seasoned developer, donated a combined $40,000.
Billionaire Joe Pérez's Related Group entities, Bluenest and Torto, donated $25,000 each.

The big picture: A few real estate attorneys, executives and other development companies also donated.
