These sisters are biking from Miami to Cape Cod to fund East Coast trail

The big picture: The Cycle Hope Ride is in support of the East Coast Greenway, a nonprofit building a 3,000-mile walking and biking route from Maine to Florida.

• The ride will also benefit another nonprofit, Third Act, which encourages older Americans to protect democracy and the environment.

Driving the news: Denise St. Pierre, the retired head coach of the Penn State University women's golf team, and her younger sister Barb, who owns a fitness center in New York state, departed from South Beach on Friday and are riding up the Florida coast.

• They will bike about 50 miles a day across 13 states and Washington, D.C., before ending in Provincetown, Massachusetts — at the tip of Cape Cod — on May 29.
• Their goal is to raise $50,000.
