Review: Niño Gordo is a unique experience

Walking into Niño Gordo is like stepping into another universe — one that is cloaked in a deep red hue and fake aquariums.
- And just before entering, you're greeted by a large, inflatable man in sunglasses, presumably the pseudo-host.
Naturally, it's in Wynwood.
The vibe: Borderline sensory overload, but you get used to it after a few minutes.
- There are no windows; wallpaper featuring babies and large fish covers the walls; the dining tables and chairs (also red) feel right out of an old-school diner; and the ceiling is covered in paper lanterns (also red).
- It's a lot! But it's fun.
State of plate: My sis-in-law and I sampled a few of the resto's dishes during our Mahjong event, so keep in mind this isn't a full menu review.
- We tried the cauliflower karaage (subtle sweetness), wing karaage (nice crunch), eel kushi with fried tapioca (interesting!) and the pork belly bao buns (our favorite).
- There was a strong wasabi flavor and heat to most of the dishes, so heads-up if that's not your vibe.
What's next: Apparently, the Katsu Sando is a favorite among guests, so we'll be back to try that next.
