Less than 2% of Miami-Dade County residents report Irish ancestry, per U.S. Census data.
Why it matters: It's St. Patrick's Day, and we thought it would be fun to know how many of our neighbors had any real connection to the holiday.
The data also puts us well below the national average of 9.5% and the state average of about 8.2%, underscoring just how different Miami-Dade's demographics are to the rest of the country.
By the numbers: Across the state, more than 1.8 million residents reported their Irish ancestry.
In Miami-Dade, it was bout 36,600 residents — less than the entire student body at Florida International University of more than 54,000 students.
