If you're a fan of Robert Is Here but Homestead is too far away, you should know that there's a similar farm stand in Broward County called Bob Roth's New River Groves.
State of place: Bob Roth's New River Groves is different in many ways from Robert Is Here (no petting zoo, no exotic fruits, less outdoor seating), but the similarities make it a must-visit spot for fresh oranges, pies and quirky Florida novelties.
Flashback: Like Robert Is Here, Bob Roth's New River Groves is a South Florida staple.
- The grove — known for its large orange float parked on Griffin Road near the Turnpike — opened in Davie in 1964 and became "one of the largest and better known citrus growers in South Florida," per its website.
- The family-owned business eventually had to get rid of its orange trees due to citrus canker, the Sun Sentinel reported, but they still ship fresh citrus and fruit baskets across North America.
- At its Davie store, you can buy homemade fudge, the acclaimed Terry's Homemade Key Lime Pie, Cuban sandwiches, stone crabs, and a wide variety of Florida kitsch, from orange blossom perfume to a $295 extra-large alligator head.

My experience: The grove is a great place to drop in for a quick smoothie, shop for a loved one's birthday, or grab lunch.
- If you're just browsing, you can grab a $9 fruit smoothie and explore the different novelty snacks, jams, jerky and fruit for sale.
- On the weekend I visited, I bought an awesome cactus from a pop-up plant nursery.
- During mango season, I was told, you can pay to pick fruit from the trees behind the store.

When I got hungry, I ordered a medianoche ($13.99), a cup of freshly squeezed orange juice ($8.95) and a key lime pie in a cup ($4.95).
- The medianoche — a Cuban sandwich on sweet bread — was generously packed with pork, but it could have been a little juicier.
- The pie in a cup — which has the same filling as Terry's pie — is the perfect little treat if you don't want the full $23 pie.
The bottom line: Next time you need a post-gym smoothie or a unique stocking stuffer for the holidays, hit up Bob Roth's New River Groves.
