Jeff and Laura "Lala" Bud, the owners of Apocalypse BBQ, recently celebrated the opening of Lala's Burgers, as the one-time pop-up earned its own full-service restaurant in Kendall.
The big picture: The Buds know all about expansion. They started Apocalypse BBQ in their backyard before opening a 43-seat restaurant in 2022.
- In 2025, Apocalypse expanded into a 190-seat location at the Kendall Village Shopping Center, boasting a 2,000-gallon rotisserie smoker.
- Lala's Burgers is now open at 13750 SW 88th St. in Kendall.
We caught up with the Buds to get some food and holiday recs...
💪 Morning Activity: We usually start our day with a workout at Lifetime in The Falls.
- With a baby on the way and the excitement of opening Lala's as its own brick-and-mortar space, we are both focused on staying healthy and keeping our energy up.
🥐 Breakfast usually means a stop at Galipan Bakehouse in Kendall. Their croissants are unbelievable — we always get a plain and a pistachio.
☕️ After breakfast, we like to head to Coral Gables and walk around the Mile, or we go over to Coconut Grove.
- We love any place where we can walk, talk and enjoy a really good coffee. Those walks are where many of our ideas begin.
🇨🇺 Lunch: Sanguich! It's one of Miami's most iconic spots, and grabbing an Old School Cuban and a Pan con Bistec feels like a requirement.
🌇 Afternoon activity: The afternoon is usually dedicated to family time. We visit Abuelo or catch up with friends, always in Kendall.
🍴 Dinner is always a challenge because there are so many restaurants in Miami that we love.
- We usually go back and forth between Sunny's, Daniel's, Boia De, Walrus Rodeo, Zitz Sum, or Kojin 2.0. Each of these places inspires us in different ways, and that energy shows up in the creativity and bold flavors we bring to Day One Hospitality.
😴 Late night is not really part of our routine.
- We like to say we are 90-year-olds in 30-something bodies. Between the new restaurant and a baby coming soon, early nights keep us going.
