New North Beach sculpture honors women in World War II

• The sculpture, created by French sculptor Prune Nourry in collaboration with Miami-based landscape architect Raymond Jungles, was unveiled last month.
• It's Nourry's first public art project in the U.S.

What they're saying: "Learning about the U.S. Coast Guard SPARs — a locally rooted history that inspired the work — and connecting with veteran Nellie Locust's family, whose features shaped Reflection, has been a truly meaningful experience," Nourry said in a news release.

The intrigue: The sculpture depicts a half-face lying on its side, the full face seen then in the reflection on the water.

• It was inspired by Locust, a veteran of the Coast Guard SPARs, a group that "form[ed] an important part of Miami Beach's history and women's evolving role" in the post-war era, the release said.
