Some of Miami's funniest women are competing in a satirical beauty pageant this weekend — but only one will be crowned Miss Dade.
Why it matters: Saturday's Miss Dade Comedy Pageant at the Villain Theater offers valuable stage time for up-and-coming entertainers trying to hone their craft, the show's producer Cristina Argüelles tells Axios.
State of play: Argüelles, a South Florida-based writer, producer and performer, says she wanted to poke fun at the beauty pageants she competed in during high school.
- "It's a campy, over-the-top night celebrating the funny women who light up South Florida's stages. Part pageant, part variety show, part fever dream," she writes on a fundraising page for the show.
How it works: Seven contestants representing different South Florida cities and places will compete in three categories: individual talent, group performance and Q&A.
🐶 For the talent category, this year's contestants are doing everything from dog tricks to self-defense demonstrations, Argüelles says.
- Last year's inaugural winner, "Miss Fort Lauderdale" Katie Lyons, did a ventriloquy act about the menstrual cycle.
🤔 For the Q&A segment, Argüelles and her co-host, Villain Theater chief operations officer Jannelys Santos, will come up with one question each for the contestants.
- "We're not really asking them to solve climate change or whatever, we just want to see who has the most entertaining answer," Argüelles said.
- Audience members will use a QR code to vote for the winner.
The intrigue: Contestants, who are paid a stipend to participate, are invited to create characters embodying their locale, she said.
- For example, Miss Everglades is a supernatural being. Miss Hollywood tried to make it in LA, but settled for Florida. Miss Little Havana is a religious chef.
If you go: 8:30pm, Oct. 11 at the Villain Theater, 5865 NE 2nd Ave.
