Zak the Baker trades free bread for poems about Miami food culture

Why it matters: The "Poems for Bread" initiative asks Miamians to write a haiku celebrating South Florida food culture.

• Think, our native crops, the people who harvest and cook them, and our food traditions.

How it works: All October, anyone who writes a food-themed haiku — unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables — will receive a free loaf of bread at the Wynwood bakery.

• Poems must be written at Zak the Baker on custom O, Miami prompt cards and submitted during hours of operation (Sunday-Friday, 7am to 5pm).
• The bakery will be closed Thursday and Oct. 7, 8, 14 and 15.
• The exchange is limited to one trade per person per day and includes all fresh bread in the bakery with the exception of braided challah, while supplies last.

What's next: The poems will be judged and the grand prize winner will receive free bread for a year. The runner up will receive a native fruit tree.
