Floridians love their beauty rest, Apple Watch data shows

Why it matters: Don't let your friends' crazy late-night Instagram stories make you think you're old and boring. OK, maybe we are. But at least we're not alone!

State of snooze: Florida's average bedtime is 11:37pm, same as the national average, based on watch data from adults who shared info with the Apple Heart and Movement Study.

• Floridians sleep about 6 hours and 38 minutes a night, two minutes less than the U.S. average.

The intrigue: Florida was the fifth oldest state in the U.S. in 2024, per the Census and being out in the sun makes you more tired.

Zoom out: Hawaiians were the earliest to bed (11:06 p.m.) but also slept the least (6 hours, 31 minutes).

• D.C. residents had the latest bedtime (11:56 p.m.) followed by New Yorkers (11:53 p.m.).

The big picture: Most people aren't getting the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, which impacts mood and health.

What they're saying: "The most important thing" for sleep hygiene is going to bed at the same time daily, sleep medicine physician Shalini Paruthi tells Axios.

• If you must catch up on Zs over the weekend, she recommends getting extra shuteye Saturday morning but waking up closer to your weekday time on Sunday, so you're tired enough to stick with your bedtime that evening.
• Another tip: "Bright light first thing in the morning is incredibly important."
