Miami's emerging musicians are joining forces this weekend for a special concert highlighting the impact of the University of Miami's music school.
Why it matters: The newest crop of students from the Frost School of Music are reinvigorating the local music scene as they play shows across the city, release new albums of original music, and collaborate with classmates.
The latest: Six UM musicians will headline Havana Harmonies at 7pm Saturday at The Dead Flamingo at Casa Tiki in Little Havana.
- Acts include Lena Joy, Rug, Vania Junco, Maeve and Luke Pascal.
- Tickets are $10 at the door.
What they're saying: Lena Joy, a 19-year-old jazz vocal sophomore at Frost, is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter from Los Angeles.
- She says she was nervous about leaving LA's more established indie music scene, but she soon realized that Miami musicians were "doing such awesome things in the same relative vein."
- "I really found a lot of joy in the community here and it's different from LA in a lot of ways, which is super cool."
State of play: Joy says the Frost School is a tight-knit community where classmates encourage each other to stay creative.
- "I just think people want to hear each other play," she says. "Music is a community thing, it's always been that way, and it thrives when that's the basis of it all, like we're all gonna get together and hear each other."
How to find her: Performing as a solo act, Joy released her first songs last year and has more singles and an album in the works, she says.
- After Saturday's show, she will be performing next Friday at Tea & Poets in South Miami.
