Nonprofit, city host community clean-up events at Monument Island

What's happening: Clean Miami Beach, a local nonprofit, is hosting 11 community beach cleanups at Monument Island, the first of which took place last month.

• The city of Miami Beach received a $20,000 grant from the Florida Inland Navigation District for debris removal and upkeep services. The city is providing $2,000 in in-kind contributions.
• Along with the clean-up events, the grant will fund increased debris pickup at Monument Island through an existing county contract.

If you go: The cleanup events will last three hours and include free kayak rentals for four participants per cleanup event.

• Participants will meet at the boat ramp at Maurice Gibb Park and travel to Monument Island, where they will pick up debris and then sort and weigh the trash.
• The next clean up will be this Saturday, Aug. 9, then Sept. 5, Oct. 11, Nov. 22 and Dec. 6.

By the numbers: At its first cleanup as part of the partnership, Clean Miami Beach said a group of 10 volunteers removed 132 pounds of trash — including 58 food wrappers, 36 aluminum cans and 21 plastic grocery bags.

Meanwhile, Clean Miami Beach is celebrating a big milestone on Aug 19: its 500th cleanup.
