UF researchers get $1 million grant to study South Florida flooding

• "Saltwater intrusion isn't just a future concern—it's already happening," said Young Gu Her, an associate professor of hydrology and water resources engineering at the UF/IFAS Tropical Research and Education Center and leader of the project.

Driving the news: The UF/IFAS team was awarded $1 million from the National Science Foundation to explore nature-based solutions to flooding along with traditional infrastructure like seawalls.

• The project aims to help local governments make "science-based, cost-effective choices about land use, infrastructure, climate adaptation and flooding mitigation," according to a press release.
