How it works: 32 clubs from 20 countries will compete across the U.S. for the title of world's greatest club team and up to $125 million in prize money.

The intrigue: Every team except Inter Miami qualified for the tournament on merit, per ESPN.

• Inter was controversially chosen to fill the 32nd slot — reserved for a team from the host nation — after finishing the 2024 season with the best record in Major League Soccer, despite losing in the playoffs. (The MLS Cup-winning LA Galaxy were not chosen.)
