Miami commissioner's proposal to ban feeding strays scrapped before discussion

State of play: An effort to prohibit feeding stray animals was proposed — then quickly killed, before it could be considered at tomorrow's county commission meeting — after activists pushed back.

Why it matters: Looks like I'll be avoiding certain streets whenever I walk a pup.

What happened: Miami-Dade Commissioner Raquel Regalado proposed a policy that would have banned folks from feeding stray cats and dogs, and other animals like peacocks, on commercial and public property.

• She told NBC 6 the issue was with folks illegally feeding on commercial properties and "creating a situation that after the cats are done, they have feces and other animals that come to the area."
• The proposal, she argued, would ensure clean areas where "people can traverse without having to deal with rodents."

But Commissioner Joe Corollo argued the stray cat population does "a great service" to the community by eating rodents.

• Animal advocates, who joined Corollo during a news conference, said feeding bans don't work. "They cause animals to become desperate."
