Miami Beach mayor hails "spring breakup" a success

The big picture: The city introduced elaborate new marketing campaigns and parking restrictions two years ago to supplement the already-robust police presence in South Beach for spring break.

Driving the news: Mayor Steven Meiner struck a celebratory tone this week after making it past what were expected to be the busiest spring break weekends without any major incidents.

• "Spring Break used to consist of chaos and violence. For the second year in a row, strong leadership, smart legislation and a committed police force changed that," Meiner wrote on social media.

The other side: Some South Beach business owners have raised concerns about the ability of their bars and clubs to survive the anti-party messaging and heightened restrictions.

• Fort Lauderdale, which has welcomed spring breakers if they behave, has seen larger crowds this year, the Herald reported.

What's next: Spring break measures will end Monday morning.

• Beginning Thursday at 6am, non-residents can expect $30 flat rate parking at all city surface lots south of 23rd and several city garages, with entry prohibited after 6pm. (More on that below.)
• The nonresident towing rate will be $532 for South Beach tows.
• Beach entrances on Ocean Drive will have security checkpoints and close at 6 p.m.

Pro tip: Parking restrictions do not apply to Miami Beach registered residents, access card holders or permit holders.

• Miami Beach employees should park in municipal parking garages to receive the regular rates and avoid the $30 flat fee.
