- So in the spirit of keeping up with the cool kids, we compiled our own list of what's in and what's out in Miami as we head into the first full week of the year.
β What's out
π Jimmy Butler, probably: Following weeks of trade rumors and speculation about a rift between the disgruntled All-Star and Miami Heat president Pat Riley, Butler told the Heat he'd like to be traded.
- On Friday, the Heat suspended Butler for seven games for "multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team over the course of the season" and said it would listen to trade offers.
- Butler, 35, is in the final year of a contract paying him $49 million this year, but he wants a contract extension, which the team has been hesitant to offer.
- Butler told reporters last week he had lost his "joy" playing in Miami.
- Riley said last month the Heat wouldn't trade Butler, setting up a showdown between the "Godfather" and "Jimmy Buckets."
π» Breweries, apparently: 2024 was the year of never-ending announcements of food and beverage closures (keep reading for more on that), but the news of yet another brewery closure felt particularly cruel.
- Wynwood Brewing Company, Union Beer Store, Unbranded and J. Wakefield all closed this year.
ποΈ The graffiti building: The vacant, graffiti-covered building across from Bayfront Park is in the process of being demolished.
- Florida East Coast Realty plans to redevelop the downtown landmark into Miami's tallest building.
βΎοΈ Your favorite Marlins players: Baseball fans were angry to see the team once again trade away some of its best players in 2024.
- Gone are Luis Arraez, Jazz Chisholm and Jake Burger.
- Some fans even protested outside loanDepot Park, asking owner Bruce Sherman to sell the team.
β What's in
π Smashburgers: From Cowy Burger to Skinny Louie Burgers, these pressed burgers are everywhere in Miami. Peep the Infatuation's ranking of them all.
πͺ Florida's political power: Miami β and Florida more broadly β might be very well represented in the new Trump administration.
- Trump nominated Miami-born U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio as secretary of state and Miami-Dade Commissioner Kevin Cabrera to be ambassador to Panama.
- Leon Medical Centers founder Benjamin Leon Jr. was tapped to be ambassador to Spain.
π€ Cybertrucks: The futuristic Tesla trucks are the new South Florida status symbol. There was even a fur-covered Cybertruck at Art Basel that sideswiped another car.
βοΈ Tyler Herro: The Miami Heat guard, who has endured years of swirling trade rumors, is having his best season yet for Miami.
- The former Sixth Man of the Year might make his first All-Star team.
