The swanky new restaurant and music venue that replaced Shuckers hasn't officially opened, but it's already on thin ice with the neighbors.
State of play: Palm Tree Club received about a dozen noise complaints during Art Week for throwing a VIP party attended by the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Ivanka Trump, a North Bay Village spokesperson tells Axios.
- The loud music, authorized to go until 11pm under a special events permit, led to resident complaints on social media. One neighbor told Axios she called the police.
The latest: North Bay Village announced last week that the club was adopting new noise-reducing measures, including removing six bass speakers from the venue and limiting live DJs to Saturdays until 10pm.
- Existing speakers will be reoriented away from residential areas and toward the water, and the club's owners will look into setting up "portable sound baffling screens" for events, per village spokesperson Julie Leonardi.
What they're saying: "Noise levels were higher than what our community expects and finds acceptable," Leonardi told Axios.
- She said the club decided to reduce its noise "without being asked" and that it wants to be a good neighbor, offering special discounts to locals, for instance.
- "We want to assure our residents that we are committed to protecting the peaceful character of our neighborhood, and we are in constant communication with Palm Tree Club management to ensure they become a considerate addition to our community."
The other side: Some residents said they weren't even bothered by the music.
- "I am beyond excited for a day club in my neighborhood," one Facebook user wrote in a community group. "As a busy mom I have no energy by 9pm to go out which is a norm. Having a place that's fun and happening early on is a game changer."
Palm Tree Club issued a statement to Axios reiterating its commitment to "being a good and respectful neighbor to the North Bay Village community."
What's next: The venue officially opens Wednesday, per World Red Eye.
- It's hosting Diplo and Jungle for New Year's Eve weekend concerts.
