Life-sized elephant herd coming to Miami Beach for Art Week

Driving the news: The touring elephant installation, which stopped in New York City and Newport, Rhode Island, will arrive on the sands of Mid Beach near 36th Street on Sunday. 

• Lovers of art and animals can see the exhibit for free or buy the artisan-made sculptures for as much as $28,000, with proceeds benefiting conservation groups.
• Because we're in Miami, the elephants naturally have their own custom smell: "COEXISTENCE" by luxury Italian fragrance house Xerjoff.

How they're made: Indigenous Indian artisans from The Real Elephant Collective craft each sculpture based on real elephants they live alongside.

• The sculptures are made out of an invasive weed called Lantana camara and metal. 
• They range in size from about 176 pounds for a calf to about 880 pounds for a tusker, which also measures 15 feet long. 
• The exhibition is organized by Elephant Family USA.

What's next: Other public art installations will join the herd beginning Dec. 3 for Miami Art Week. 

• That includes "Miami Reef Star," a 60-foot sculpture of 46 star modules designed for the Miami Beach Reefline, a planned underwater sculpture park.
