Give Miami Day, the 24-hour fundraiser, supports local nonprofits. Here's how to help

The big picture: The 24-hour donation period is the biggest fundraising day of the year. 

• The organizations are able to use the dollars received in whatever way they choose, per the Miami Foundation, which organizes the event. 
• The nonprofits serve health, housing, education, LGBTQ+ and women's rights services and the arts, among others. 

How it works: The online fundraiser begins just after midnight Thursday morning. (Early giving began Sunday.) 

• The organizations are grouped into 10 categories. 
• Donors can choose an organization or give to an issue area. The minimum donation amount is $25. 

By the numbers: Last year, Give Miami Day raised more than $34 million dollars in donations from 46,000 donors – a record, according to the Miami Foundation. 

• Since 2019, the number of unique donors has grown by 101%.
