Hispanic Heritage Month began this week, and events are happening almost daily throughout the next few weeks to celebrate.
Why it matters: The Hispanic population makes up nearly 70% of Miami-Dade County and the monthlong recognition highlights the contributions the community has historically had on the arts, culture and way of life here.
- Miami-Dade County's theme this year is "Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together."
The big picture: The observance started as a one-week celebration in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson. President Ronald Reagan expanded it and signed it into law in 1988.
- The time frame — Sept. 15-Oct. 15 — overlaps with the Independence Days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico and Chile.
The latest: The county's Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board is kicking-off a series of events tomorrow at the Stephen P. Clark Government Center at 12:30pm.
- The county's Hispanic Heritage Festival is Oct. 9 from 5pm-9pm at Country Village Park.
