Going for gold: How did Florida's athletes fare in the Paralympics?

Florida's Paralympians brought gold-medal glory to the Sunshine State.

Competition wrapped up over the weekend, so let's take a look at their haul:

Abbas Karimi, Para Swimming

• The 27-year-old Fort Lauderdale resident won two silver medals in the mixed 4x50 freestyle relay 20pts and the mixed 4x50m medley relay 20pts.
• Karimi fled his native Afghanistan at age 16 and cycled through refugee camps before settling in the U.S.

Nicky Nieves, Sitting Volleyball

• The Central Florida native won gold with Team USA's women's sitting volleyball team.
• Nieves is now a two-time gold medalist.

Morgan Ray, Para Swimming

• The 22-year-old St. Augustine native — competing in his first Paralympics — won silver in the mixed 4x50m medley relay 20pts.

Gemma Wollenschlaeger, Para-Rowing

• The St. Augustine Beach native won silver in the mixed PR3 coxed four.

Lee Fredette, Wheelchair rugby

• The 41-year-old University of Miami graduate won his third straight silver medal with Team USA.

Christie Raleigh Crossley, Para Swimming

• The 37-year-old swimmer, who attended high school in Fort Lauderdale and swam at Florida State University, won five medals — two gold, two silver and one bronze.
• The new world-record holder in the 50-meter freestyle S9 says they have faced bullying "because I'm not missing limbs or because people think I don't 'look disabled.'"
