Beth Boone, the artistic and executive director of Miami Light Project, is this year's Berresford Prize winner.

Why it matters: The award — which comes with $50,000 — honors one person in America who has contributed to the "advancement, wellbeing and care of artists in society," per United States Artists, the national arts-funding organization that oversees it.

The big picture: A longtime leader of South Florida's cultural community, Boone has led Miami Light Project since 1998.

She's credited with establishing Here & Now, a commission and presenting program for community-based artists; cultural exchanges with Cuba; and The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse.

What they're saying: USA board chair Ed Henry said Boone's work has "steered and cultivated Miami's cultural sector throughout decades of growth and change."

Boone said she's grateful for the recognition, and it's "rewarding to have our work be seen and acknowledged on a national level."
