A covered, year-round marketplace called Grandview Station is opening in the heart of downtown Grandview this summer, the city's biggest Main Street investment in years.
Why it matters: Grandview's farmers market has always been a Saturday-only operation and bounced around to different locations. This gives vendors and the community a permanent, year-round space.
Zoom in: The 2026 farmers market opens shortly after the June kickoff, running twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays, city communications director Valarie Poindexter tells Axios.
- More than 30 vendor applications are already in, a mix of bakers, produce growers and artisans.
- The market will accept SNAP benefits, per Poindexter.
Follow the money: The $2.1 million came from four sources:
- $350,000 from the 2022 Building Up Grandview bond.
- $750,000 from a state Community Development Block Grant two years later, which Poindexter says determined the location and scale.
- $850,000 in federal funds, secured by Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, closed the gap this year.
- $150,000 from the city.
The intrigue: Grandview Station is built to host more than the farmers market.
- The space can be rented for weddings, birthdays and anniversaries, and will house the holiday craft market.
- Mayor Leonard Jones has floated the idea of moving the city's Christmas tree lighting to the space.
What they're saying: "Grandview gives small-town vibes and big-city energy," Poindexter tells Axios, describing a Main Street that's been quietly transforming for the last decade.
- "We're hoping those Saturday visitors will want to check out Grandview Farmers Market, or our market visitors will want to grab breakfast at those restaurants," she says.
- "Our goal is for Grandview Station to become a go-to destination for the community."
What's next: It doesn't have a set grand opening, but Grandview Station's first event is a "global games" watch party on June 23.
- The city will start taking event reservations from the public in early July.
