Protesters gathered downtown Tuesday in solidarity with demonstrators in Los Angeles, ahead of planned No Kings protests this weekend.
The big picture: The rallies follow a week of unrest nationwide sparked by President Trump's deployment of the National Guard and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement crackdowns in immigrant communities.
Zoom out: Similar protests erupted across the U.S. Thousands filled downtown Chicago streets Tuesday night as part of the wave of anti-ICE and anti-military-deployment protests that followed raids and unrest in California.
The latest: Gov. Mike Kehoe signed an executive order Thursday activating the Missouri National Guard as a precaution ahead of Saturday's planned protests.
In the order, Kehoe said Missouri is taking a "proactive approach" to potential civil unrest and emphasized support for peaceful protest, while pledging to "not tolerate violence or lawlessness."
