What to know about election season in Broward

With just months to go until the November election, the field of candidates will be set this week for races ranging from the county commission to Congress.

Why it matters: Friday's qualifying deadline will determine who will appear on the ballot for congressional, statewide, state Senate, state House, county commission and school board races.

State of play: Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed a new congressional map that could net four more Republican seats in Congress and forced Broward Democrat incumbents to run in new districts this November.

After the redrawn map eliminated her South Florida seat, Broward Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced her to run in the majority Black 20th Congressional District despite public outcry from local Black leaders.
U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz is now running in the 25th District, which now stretches from Miami-Dade to Palm Beach county. His current district shifted north into Palm Beach.

Zoom in: In Broward, County Commission seats 2, 4, 6 and 8 and School Board seats 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8 are also on the ballot

While it is not an election year in Fort Lauderdale, the city is holding a special election for the District 1 seat following Commissioner John Herbst's resignation.
