Scoop: Region's aviation industry is getting another big boost

Driving the news: Cincinnati and Dayton are among five inaugural communities in Lifting Futures, the GE Aerospace Foundation's $30 million effort to train 10,000 workers nationally by 2030, the company is set to announce Wednesday.

Zoom in: About $500,000 of that will go to three local training programs:

• Sinclair College will expand manufacturing and welding courses and launch an accelerated technician program, training more than 150 workers.
• Hobart Institute of Welding Technology will recruit and place 50 students into open seats in its Troy welding program.
• The Talent Collaborative of Greater Cincinnati, a regional workforce development organization, will connect workers with industry opportunities.

Also: GE Aerospace is putting $400,000 into the United Way of Greater Cincinnati's Future of Manufacturing Fund, another career pipeline.

What they're saying: "We recognize that there is a broader need across the industry to make sure that we have enough skilled workers to meet the demand that we're facing today and into the future," Meghan Thurlow, president of the GE Aerospace Foundation, tells Axios.

The big picture: GE doesn't expect everyone trained through these programs to work for GE. Thurlow says that's the point.

• GE depends on suppliers and manufacturers that need many of the same skilled workers, so a shortage at one can ripple through the industry.

What's next: GE and CVG airport plan to distribute "Let's Go Aerospace" magazines to public middle school libraries throughout the region, introducing students to aviation careers beyond pilots and engineers.
