lowes talent hub
With construction of a new 23-story global technology hub underway in the heart of South End, it’s safe to say Lowe’s is investing big in tech.
The tower is expected to be completed by late 2021, and the home improvement retailer is already hiring top tech talent.
Over the next few months, Lowe’s is hiring software engineers for mobile, UI and Java engineers for its e-commerce, data and analytics supply chain, store and merchandising teams. There are currently 90 open software engineering roles, ranging from entry-level to leadership.

To learn more about the hiring push and get details about the roles, I spoke with Matt Keener and Nithya Nair, both senior software engineering managers at Lowe’s. Here’s what they told me.
Why software engineers and why now?
“With all the technical innovations happening at Lowe’s, there is a heavy focus to give the customers the best shopping experience. So tech is going to be a primary focus in the coming years as well as a means to support the business needs,” says Nithya. “We’re currently going through a transformation wherein IT teams would get to build new systems from the ground up to replace monolith applications.”
Matt, who works on the Associate Mobility team, echoed that the company’s focus right now is on tech innovation. “Right now Lowe’s is basically saying ‘Look, we have a great set of applications and robust infrastructure, now how can we look to the future and build brand new experiences and things people have never seen in a retail location.”
What kinds of projects would software engineers in these roles be working on?
Matt’s team, which includes about 40 engineers, builds Android applications for Lowe’s associates who work in the retail stores. “Our goal is to enable Lowe’s associates to better take care of our customers and untether them so they can move more freely about the store,” explains Matt.
During the pandemic, Matt’s team collaborated with the company’s consumer application team to create the capability to buy items online and pick up at a Lowe’s store (or have them delivered to your car). “We’re building things that can keep our associates safe and customers safe,” says Matt. “We pulled it off in a matter of months.”
What’s the culture at Lowe’s like?
“We don’t have a top down culture. We try and make sure all of our team members have a voice,” says Matt. “We have a focus on our team that’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Lowe’s is completely dedicated to its people. You feel like you’re part of a family and that feeling permeates everything we do.”
Matt also mentioned Lowe’s commitment to community. The company has contributed more than $100 million in 2020 to help communities impacted by the pandemic, including $55 million to support small businesses. Earlier this year they also used 3D printers to produce and donate thousands of PPE to help keep Charlotteans safe during the pandemic. “Lowe’s is one of those companies you can feel proud of,” says Matt.

It’s also worth noting that Lowe’s was recognized as one of the Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion as well as one of the Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality. They scored 100% on both the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index and the Disability Equality Index.
Will these roles be remote?
As of right now, the majority of Lowe’s corporate employees are working from home. The company has not announced when employees may be returning to their corporate HQ in Mooresville. Until then, everything will remain remote, including the hiring and onboarding processes.
But not to worry. Lowe’s teams have adjusted quickly to working remote. “We’ve been able to collaborate and work in a virtual environment without losing our focus,” says Nithya.
Do you have any advice for potential candidates?
“If you want to work at Lowe’s, be prepared to be challenged,” says Matt. “We’re doing stuff that hasn’t been done before in retail. That’s super exciting but you have to be ready for it.”
