Once we eventually start returning to workplaces, schools, and our favorite restaurants, we’ll all have to think about shared spaces and surfaces in a whole new way.

Even our own homes have felt less clean as we realize how easy it is for germs to come inside with us. During quarantine, essential businesses that have been able to remain open have had to get creative to protect their customers. Grocery store aisles are one-way. Delivery drivers have perfected the contactless delivery.

At home, you may have ramped up your weekly routine to include extra wipe downs of high contact surfaces – we’re looking at you, fridge handles.

Luckily, there are now measures that businesses and homeowners can take to even further reduce the spread of germs and offer a little more peace of mind.

Killingsworth Environmental recently launched EnviroKlean, an EPA-approved disinfectant that kills several types of viruses and disease-causing bacteria, including COVID-19.

If you’re not familiar with Killingsworth, it’s one of the largest pest-control companies in North America. And it was started just down the road in Indian Trail. They’ve always been innovative when it comes to offering new services, and EnviroKlean is no different.

EnviroKlean was originally only offered to businesses, as a proactive way to protect their employees and customers from the virus. After reassessing demand, Killingsworth decided to open the service up to residential customers, too. To learn more about it, I talked to Concepcion Gutierrez, EnviroKlean Division Manager at Killingworth.

How does EnviroKlean work?

Through disinfectant, sanitizer, and virucide products, EnviroKlean kills SARS-CoV-19, the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease. It also combats a spectrum of nearly 40 other bacteria. The products they use are more powerful than anything you’d be able to find yourself, and they’re administered by experts in full protective gear. In other words, don’t try this on your own.

To ensure that a space is completely disinfected, the pros at Killingsworth use a combination of bio-fogging and a hard surface wipe down. Bio-fogging is “designed to disperse the disinfectant in fine particles that will settle onto all surfaces,” Gutierrez says. Basically, it disinfects everything – even the hard-to-reach areas. The wipe down on high-traffic surfaces and areas provides extra protection against viruses and bacteria.

How much does the service cost?

The pricing depends on square footage and time that the job will actually take, but it generally starts around $500. You can request a quote to find out how much it would cost for your specific space.

What types of businesses can use EnviroKlean?

EnviroKlean is designed for “any commercial business,” Gutierrez says. He notes that retail stores can “get a huge benefit from this service” because you’re able to disinfect all the inventory you have out at one time, thanks to bio-fogging.

It’s even safe for restaurants as long as some extra steps are taken before and after the service. “We have to do a visual preparation before any kind of treatment to exclude exposed food prep areas,” says Gutierrez.

Is EnviroKlean safe?

If you’re thinking of getting your space disinfected, Concepcion says the most important thing is to make sure the products are safe and effective. All of Killingsworth’s disinfectants are EPA-registered, giving you one less thing to worry about.

What about if I have kids/pets?

Residential treatments work much like commercial treatments, with a few extra precautions. Like commercial, everyone except the technicians will need to leave the house during the treatment and for two hours afterwards. Sounds like a great time to go for a drive or a long walk.

Some areas, like a room with an aquarium, will need additional prepwork to make sure the rooms are protected. When the technicians arrive at a house, they’ll do a walkthrough to make sure everything is good to go. After the treatment, areas like playrooms should be cleaned again with a nontoxic product.

How long does the process take?

Depending on the square footage of your space, the length of the treatment can vary. Gutierrez says it takes about 1-2.5 hours for 8,000 square feet. During that time, your business or house needs to be empty.

How often should the treatment be done?

Gutierrez recommends having EnviroKlean done on a regular basis. There are lots of other harmful bacteria out there that this service can protect against, even after the threat of COVID-19 has diminished. “This will have a big impact during flu season, especially in workplaces. It gives you peace of mind about your workplace,” he says.
