When Rebekah Davidson moved in to her new home, she knew one closet would need some work to make it functional.
The story: She called the pros at California Closets to maximize the small space (we’re talking just 12 square feet), and the results are impressive.
Plus, the space goes beyond utility to bring in pops of color and design.
- Looking at you, statement wall. 😍
We asked Rebekah and her California Closets designer, Mariel Taveras, about the project.
What was your motivation for this project?

Rebekah: We moved into a new build home last year and one of the two closets in the master was TINY, but I was determined to make the most out of every bit of storage we had.
- The strategy: I told the builders to leave my closet as a blank canvas knowing I would be able to come up with something that would provide maximum storage and efficiency.
In the meantime, I was using a wire shelf and a bookshelf. While they did the job of physically holding the clothes, it was a mess.
Why did you choose California Closets?
Rebekah:Ultimately, they were able to turn my vision into reality and truly customize this space to meet my design aesthetic and organization needs.
- I could have picked some different options that would have dropped the cost, but this closet is a hidden gem in our house — and worth the cost!
What was it like to work with California Closets?
Rebekah: It was so easy!
- Here’s why: Mariel got to know our wants and needs before we even showed her the closet. She listened to my vision, and I was able to trust her input on what would and would not work in my space.
What was your budget for this project?

What finishes/features did you use in this room?
Mariel: The units are our “Stone” finish and the pull out shelves are the “Pietra” finish.
- Pull out shelves were a must for this space. They have a front lip for easy grabbing.
What is your favorite thing about the finished room?
Rebekah: My clothes finally have a beautifully organized space to call home. I can easily find my clothes, and it’s simple to keep everything neat and folded because of the pull out shelves.
- A clean closet gives me so much peace of mind.
Looking ahead: We plan on doing more projects with California Closets. I feel like walk-in closets often get the custom treatment, but people just don’t realize how valuable it can be to customize small closets, too.
Mariel: I enjoyed the process because Rebekah trusted 100% in my design skills. Our interactive CAD program helped her understand the real potential of her space.
