As you're making your holiday plans, don't forget to pencil in a little reprieve from the hustle and bustle — even if it's just a quick getaway. Luckily, living in Charlotte means the mountains, coast and several exploration-worthy places are just a short drive from the city.
Why it matters: You don't always need a week off to feel like you've gotten away. Short trips, called "microcations," make it easier to squeeze a vacation into a weekend — or even a day.
Here are five destinations within four hours of Uptown Charlotte that are worth hitting the road for.
Winston-Salem

Drive: About 1 hour, 20 minutes from Uptown. That's arguably shorter than the wait for brunch most weekends in Charlotte.
Why go: Winston-Salem is close enough for a day trip (trust me, I've done it), but there's enough art, shopping and good food for a whole weekend.
What to do: Grab coffee at Krankies, brunch at Young Cardinal, browse locally owned shops downtown, then wander Reynolda Gardens.
- The gardens are free and connect to Reynolda Village and the Reynolda House Museum of American Art.
Don't miss: A chai latte at Chad's Chai — seriously.

Greenville, South Carolina

Drive: About 1 hour, 40 minutes from Uptown. That's just an episode or two of your favorite podcast.
Why go: Greenville combinessmall town Southern charm with the restaurants, cocktail bars and growth of a much bigger city.
What to do: Walk the shops and restaurants downtown, see Falls Park on the Reedy or bike part of the 22-mile Swamp Rabbit Trail.
- Make dinner reservations at Scoundrel, which earned Greenville's first Michelin star in 2026.
- Check out Asada for no frills, top tier Latin food and sangria.
Don't miss: A French brunch at Passerelle Bistro in Falls Park — get the French toast, of course.
Asheville

Drive: About 2 hours from Uptown. That's about three spins of Rainbow Kitten Surprise's "How to: Friend, Love, Freefall."
Why go: Asheville's eclectic food, art and brewery scene makes it a no-brainer for a weekend escape, especially in fall, and a chance to support Western North Carolina businesses continuing to recover from Hurricane Helene.
What to do: Stop in Black Mountain on the way, eat Indian street food at Chai Pani, save room for dessert at Potential New Boyfriend, catch a show at Rabbit Rabbit.
- Get outdoors and hike Black Balsam Knob in Pisgah National Forest about an hour away. Or, simply enjoy leaf peeping on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which you'll drive right through.
Don't miss: Enjoying the sights — and a drink — on a rooftop bar — I like The Radical Hotel in River Arts District.

Charleston

Drive: About 3 hours from Uptown. That's basically the same time it would take you to watch "Forrest Gump" and dry your tears after.
Why go: Charleston is made for a long weekend, with its cobblestone streets, centuries of history and some of the South's best restaurants — not to mention multiple beaches just a short drive away.
What to do: Head downtown, grab breakfast at Babas on Cannon, get a great view of the city at Citrus Club atop the Dewberry and fill up on oysters at 167 Raw. Between meals, make time for the city's historic sites, such as the City Market.
- For beaches, pick Isle of Palms for a lively beach scene or Sullivan's Island for something quieter.
Don't miss: A side quest to the town of Mount Pleasant — about 15 minutes from Charleston. Make a night out of it at Shem Creek or have a relaxing dinner at the Post House.
Wilmington & Wrightsville Beach

Drive: About 3½–4 hours from Uptown. That's about three episodes of "The Summer I Turned Pretty."
Why go: Wilmington gives you two vacations in one — a walkable historic downtown and Wrightsville Beach about 20 minutes away.
What to do: Weather permitting, spend the day on the beach — walk or run the Wrightsville Beach Loop for some extra steps. Then, grab tacos and margaritas at Tower 7.
- In all seasons, Wilmington's historic downtown is a must explore — a few of my favorite stops Bespoke (all day cafe), Copper Penny and Fork n' Cork (food) and The Husk (bar). I highly suggest a ghost tour, or at the very least, a walk along the Riverwalk.
- The nearby Cargo District is full of good food, drinks and shops, too.
Don't miss: A sunrise or sunset on the Johnnie Mercers pier (sometimes there's even yoga!).
Fun fact: Fans of "The Summer I Turned Pretty" might recognize a few familiar spots around Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, where parts of the hit series were filmed.
