A WNBA player and her sister are opening a coffee shop in downtown Concord in September.
Why it matters: Sisters and co-owners Karlee McBride-Webber and Kayla McBride, a guard for the Minnesota Lynx, want 1122 Coffee Co. to feel like an extension of their home.
Zoom in: The name "1122" comes from the number of the childhood home address in Erie, Pennsylvania. Growing up in a basketball family, Karlee and Kayla traveled often and made a point to seek out local coffee shops instead of chains, inspiring them to open a place of their own.
- "We're kind of bringing our living room to the neighborhood," Karlee said.
What to expect: The menu will feature lattes, cappuccinos and espresso drinks made with locally roasted coffee, North Carolina ingredients and house-made syrups.
- Signature drinks include the blueberry-vanilla 1122 Latte, matcha topped with blueberry cold foam and a brown sugar honey latte sweetened with brown sugar and honey.
- They'll also have food items from Mooresville's Ladolka Deluxe Bakery, including pastries and cinnamon rolls, plus savory options like ham-and-cheese and spinach croissants.
- Eventually, Kayla — who Karlee says is a "really, really good baker" — plans to contribute a signature cookie to the menu once the basketball season wraps.
The vibe: The 643-square-foot space will seat about 17 people and is designed to feel like home, with a couch and lounge seating. There will be limited seating with tables for remote working to encourage guests to unplug, relax and stay awhile, rather than just grab and go.
What's next: They plan to open 1122 Coffee Co. on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 25 Barbrick Ave SW Suite 103. It'll be open Monday–Saturday 7am-5pm and Sunday 8am-1pm.
