Today is Mayor Vi Lyles' last day as Charlotte's mayor.
Why it matters: It's the end of an era. Lyles has served the city for decades, from working in the budget office to becoming the first Black woman elected mayor of Charlotte. She's the city's second-longest-serving mayor.
After winning five consecutive terms, Lyles announced she was stepping down to spend more time with her grandchildren.
What's next: Rob Harrington will be sworn in today. A majority of the council appointed Harrington to serve the remainder of Lyles' term, about 18 months.
An attorney, he is widely expected to serve as a mediator and restore order to a council that's become slightly disorganized in its procedures.
He has pledged not to seek election in 2027. That leaves the field wide open for the mayor's seat after years of Lyles staving off competition.
Council member Malcolm Graham said Monday he has set up a committee to explore whether he should run for mayor.
