Charlotte City Council is moving forward with opening applications for an interim mayor, even as Mayor Pro Tem James "Smuggie" Mitchell publicly makes his case for the job.
Why it matters: The interim mayor would serve out the remainder of resigning Mayor Vi Lyles' term during a time of rapid growth in Charlotte.
State of play: Mitchell is one of the longest-serving council members. He was first elected in 1999 and already handles mayoral duties in Lyles' absences.
He has pledged not to run for mayor if appointed to the temporary role.
"18 months is critical for the city of Charlotte, so we don't need to take a step back or be in neutral."
