The Charlotte 49ers have named Kevin White as their eighth director of athletics.
Why it matters: White takes over as the Charlotte 49ers navigate sweeping changes in college athletics and a $70 million football stadium expansion.
What they're saying: "Charlotte has tremendous potential, strong institutional support, and a passionate fan base," White said in a statement.
Catch up quick: The 49ers parted ways with their last AD, Mike Hill, in October. Hill had been with the 49ers since February 2018 after nearly 25 years with the Florida Gators.
- Under Hill, the program transitioned from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference. They also broke ground on expanding their football stadium in August.
What we're watching: White joins the 49ers from the Clemson Tigers, where he served as the deputy director of athletics for the last four years, meaning he was second only to the program's AD.
- He was key in the ACC program's fundraising and navigating the NIL landscape, both of which are pivotal to success in today's college sports landscape. Much of his time with the Tigers was spent overseeing the department's day-to-day operations.
- "He understands what it takes to compete and succeed in today's environment and has a proven ability to strengthen programs, build meaningful partnerships and position athletics departments for sustained growth," UNC Charlotte Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber said in a statement.
Context: White, a Chattanooga, Tennessee native, has also held positions at Northwestern (2017-2022), Southern Methodist (2014-2017) and Georgia State (2009-2014).
- He has a master's degree from Georgia State, an MBA from Kennesaw State and a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Zoom in: The 49ers used TurnkeyZRG, a consulting firm, to assist in the search for a new AD.
What's next: White will be introduced at a public press conference on campus Thursday, Feb. 26, at 4pm in the third-floor salons at Halton Arena.
