Lights along Tryon Street in Uptown are about to get brighter.
Why it matters: Local leaders hope the change, which is part of the City of Charlotte's Tryon Street Refresh campaign, will help address real and perceived public safety in Uptown.
State of play: The city is working with Duke Energy to upgrade streetlights with energy-efficient LED lights for the first phase of the Tryon Street Refresh. There are roughly 2,900 in Uptown, and roughly 62% have already been converted to LED.
Part of the process also includes identifying outages and trimming trees that block existing lights.
Leaders believe this will help improve visibility and walkability.
What they're saying: "It would be easy to underestimate the importance of this," Michael Smith told reporters Thursday. "There's nothing like the power of light."
